The choir performance 'The Songs We Love' was presented by the Senior and Junior Choirs of Visakha Vidyalaya on the 2nd of June 2017 at the Jeramias Dias Hall of Visakha Vidyalaya from 7.00PM onwards.
The musically enlightened evening connected with the Proud Centenary Celebration of the Visakha Vidyalaya, had the providential cachet of receiving the distinguish presence of 'Asia's Golden Voiced Soprano' Ms. Kishani Jayasinghe as the Honourable Chief Guest. Ms. Kishani Jayasinghe who is renowned as the first South Asian soprano soloist to have sung at the Royal Opera House of Buckingham Palace, is a Proud Visakhian herself. Her melancholy gifted voice which sings in eight different languages has brought her outstanding success in the Performing Arts worldwide, designating her as a noble Jewel in the South Asian Music Industry. Ms. Menaka Sahabandu a famous musical soprano, another proud product of Visakha Vidyalaya, who was gifted the award for 'Excellence in Vocal Western Music' by the SAARC Women's Association and Sri Lanka's Savasangeetha award was received as the Guest of Honour for the night.
The Visakha Vidyalaya Choir being a highly active and diligent troop presenting frequent performances in school functions and island wide competitions incorporates 37 singers within the Senior Choir headed by Kethmi Samarasinghe and Tharani Medawatte and 47 singers within their Junior Choir led by Kusheshi de Zoysa.
'The Songs We Love' showcased songs from numerous broad genres of music, presenting tunes of diverse styles such as Classical, Broadway, Film, TV and Modern. Friday night playlist also included some enduring famous Sinhala hits from prominent artists such as Corrine Almeida. The musical aspired to be a humble tribute to their Alma Mater, musicians, song writers and singers of the past hundred years.
The melodic vocals of the young Visakhians took a nostalgic move by presenting songs from Sesame Street, Oliver, West Side Story, the tuneful movie 'Sounds of Music' and many more. 'The Songs We Love' embraced songs from latest blockbuster movies such as Tangled, Frozen and some favourite gigs like Titanium, Mama Mia which got the audience singing along. The music was amazingly sensational the crowd was entertained with the highest bliss of music and couldn't have felt more fortunate.
If life was a song, love was its music. The concert crew spread their love and prayers by offering a tribute to the victims affected by the unfortunate chaos of Flood in Sri Lanka.
Accompanied by a dexterous live band, the Senior and Junior Choirs who gave their utmost dedication concluded 'The Songs We Love' as another phenomenal production of Visakha Vidyalaya.
