This significant occasion celebrated those who have excelled in various sports activities. It hosted many illustrious guests, faculty members and above all, the proud parents of the award winners.
Chief Guest of the occasion was Mr. Dervin Perera, former coach of the world renowned Lankan athlete and the nation’s first Olympic medalist, Susanthika Jayasinghe. A man no stranger to delivering perfect results, he has always been able to recognize the effort and commitment needed for success in the athletic realm; a feat surely acknowledged in all award winners of the evening.
Amid the attendees was Guest of Honor for the evening, Mr. Kaushal Silva. An Alumni of S. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia, he was the captain of the First XI team in the iconic 125th Battle of the Blues and then ventured on to become a member of the National Cricket Team as a wicketkeeper/ batsman. Recipient of the Man of the Series Award for his impeccable performance in the 2016 SL vs. England Tournament, he is of no slight accolade in the world of sports.
Among the honored recipients stood Dasuni Mendis; winner of the “Most Outstanding Player” award, both in the individual and team categories, for her performance as a chess player. She continues to excel on both the national and international scale. Apart from being among the top ranks in the island, Dasuni holds to her name an impressive 12th place on the world rankings.
Piyusha Sumanapala won Best Sports Leadership for her exceptional display of leadership and direction as the Games Captain for the years 2014/2015. Past Visakhians were also commemorated at the ceremony, with Janaki Jayawickrama being awarded Best Sports Leadership as well. At age 72, she is undoubtedly an absolute inspiration to any sportswoman.
