White gowns and blue ties were replaced by elegant traditional New Year attires of jacket and cloth, on the 4th of April 2017 as the damsels of Visakha Vidyalaya celebrated Sinhala and Hindu Avurudhu Celebrations from 9am onwards at the school premises. The school was graced with colour, by the extravaganza of New Year decorations and the attractively dressed students.
The school united together with Visakhians from all grades to participate in the unique New Year games and activities. A vast scheme of traditional games such as Tug-o-war, kanamutti Bidima, Olinda etc took place at various locations, lighting the school premises with much laughter and fun. The beauty Queen Contest also known as Avurudhu Kumariya was held to choose the prettiest and most charming of them all. Swings were hung throughout the school for the girls to swing along to the melodious Sinhala New Year songs. The Visakhians sang mellifluously as the tone of the Cuckoo Bird and danced to special New Year songs. The pleasing savour of traditional dishes of milk rice, oil cake, Kokis and sweetmeat came from each class dining table which was graced with an oil lamp in its mid.
Within all the fun and excitement in the celebrations, the girls did not forget to proceed on with the Sri Lankan rituals. All Visakhians dressed in New Year attires walked from class to class with a pluck of Betel to worship their teachers as a token of gratitude. The New Year celebrations were fabulously organized with much entertainment and play to welcome the coming year.
