Visakha Vidyalaya has reached her grand 100th year of excellence! This is obviously not news to any of you anymore since the news indeed received the publicity it truly deserved. As the New Year 2017 dawned, there was a long series of Centenary celebrations that were planned to be held throughout the year, and the list started in the usual Buddhist tradition with a blissful Bodhi Pooja that was held at the school’s own treasure, sacred ‘Visakha Bodhiya’ on the 16th of January 2017. Thousands of Visakhians from all around the country, dressed in white, gathered around this place which is very close to their hearts, to celebrate the 100th birthday of their beloved Alma Mater, and it was indeed quiet a scene to watch. A Commemorative stamp, marking this memorable occasion was launched at the school premises which followed an alms giving for 100 Bhikkunis seeking the blessings for a long, glorious and a rewarding journey ahead.
These series of events were then followed by the launch of a Commemorative Coin as a souvenir to mark the school’s Centenary year, which took place at the school premises on the 23rd of January 2017. The frosted proof, gold and silver plated coins, having a rendering of the school logo on the observe side and a portrait of Mrs. Jeremias Dias, the iconic foundress of the school, on the reverse, was ceremonially launched by Mr. President, Maithripala Sirisena, who graced the occasion.
