It comes as no secret that Sri Lanka is the home of many devoted fans of the Bollywood film industry, with an enthusiasm matching even those of its native country. It was these same fans that hailed Havelock Sports Club Grounds on the 8th of May 2016 for a once in a lifetime show performed by the renowned Bollywood singer/ songwriter, Arijit Singh.

Recipient of the Filmfare Award and Zee Cine Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2016 and 2014, along with several other noteworthy accolades, it was this Indian sensation’s first performance on Lankan soil. Not in the least daunted by this feat, Singh pulled out all the stops, bringing in tow a symphony orchestra of 45 other musicians.

The lineup of the evening was no less than extraordinary. This included many crowd favorites, such as “Kabira” from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, “Gerua” from the 2015 comedy/drama Dilwale and “Samjhawan”, the moving melody from the 2014 box office hit, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Singh even impressed on piano, delivering soulful renditions of the ever popular “Pehla Nasha” and even covering “Kal Ho Naa Ho” by Sonu Nigam, a timeless classic in the world of Bollywood music. Although threatened by a slight hint of rain, the crowd remained highly enthusiastic, gently swaying their umbrellas in tune with the music.

Singh closed off the show with none other than “Tum Hi Ho” from the critically acclaimed 2013 film, Aashiqui 2 and judging by the unanimous applause that followed, it’s safe to assume that this audience left the arena with beatific smiles and hearts content.
