The common forum for Sri Lankan scholars and professionals to network ideas and proposals to influence the policy makers of the country, “Viyathmaga” held the annual General Meeting of year 2018 on the 13th of May 2018 at the Ballroom of Shangri-la Hotel, Colombo.

The forum commenced on the theme ‘An Intellectually Inspired Sri Lanka 2030’ and was participated by over 2,000 professionals and business leaders including distinguished invitees such as the Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

The Chairman of Viyathmaga, Former Defence Secretary Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa was received as the keynote speaker of the summit. Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is widely speculated to be a 2019 presidential candidate, presented his “Vision for 2030” for Sri Lanka which comprised of futuristic policies to transform the economy.

Sri Lanka’s economy has been subjected to drastic changes over the past few years and the country is almost drifting towards a stand-still. New policies must be adopted to re-establish the economic development of Sri Lanka. Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa emphasized that it is not only the right policies but the engagement of the right people and speedy execution that is necessary for the country to move forward.

The Chairman accentuated that all investments should be equitable and profitable and that before investing, the market realities should be thoroughly analyzed to detect whether the state can obtain optimal returns. Mr.Rajapaksa questioned the forum of prominent officials whether Sri Lanka was ready for the transition of the global economic power to Asia by 2030, as the region is home to four of the top five economic powers - China, India, Japan and Indonesia. He suggested that we must adopt a social open market economic policy whilst safeguarding the sovereignty and cultural values of Sri Lanka.

Presentations were conducted by a number of renowned professionals and scholars such as Vidya Jyothi Dr. Bandula Wijeratne, Securities and Exchange Commission former Chairman Dr. Nalaka Godahewa, 99X Co-founder and CEO Mano Sekaram, Social Enterprise Lanka Founder Eranda Ginige and more. The discussion explored topics such as Social innovation, future of business and the rise of the millennial and aspirations for a people-centric economy.

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa concluded the Viyathmaga forum on a special note suggesting to embrace nationalism by moving beyond divisions of race and religion for “Sri Lanka’s future is in our hands”.
