Glamalert ~ From High Street
GLAMALERT from High Street kicks off on the 21st of April at the Park Street Mews

With few more days to go for probably the biggest charity fashion show of the year, I’ve got everything you need to know about what's going down under the tents
By Prashanthi Jayasekara
With designs from high-street to high-end, GlamAlert hits runway on the 21st of April at the Park Street Mews, to bring you the edgy Military-inspired to contemporary Far East fashion designs. The fashion show indulges artist portrayals of hunger, poverty, and violence against women, and will take charge by means of vivid colours of nature, and historical resemblance.

When Ama from the Rotaract Club of Centennial United (RCCU) attended a fashion show at the beginning of the year, it may have never occurred to her that her reach out to Himesh, the president of the club, would lead to the biggest Rotaract organized charity fashion show for the year 2012. Ama was inspired to bring the glamour of fashion in the realm of charity and hence ‘GlamAlert’, will hit the runway on the 21st of April at the Park Street Mews from 6.30 p.m. onwards. All proceeds from the evening will be contributed to help provide books to underprivileged schools in the outskirts of Colombo.

This is the second year RCCU is organizing a fashion show in this nature. ‘Gallardo’ was organized in 2010 together with the Rotaract club of Battaramulla in Queens hotel, Kandy and the event was sponsored by ‘Lux’, Unilever Sri Lanka. The project won the Most Outstanding Public Relations Project for 2009-2010. Bhagya, who was the Creator of ‘Gallardo’, acts as an advisor for GlamAlert 2012.

Ama, Himesh, Bhagya and the team including the choreographer Umanga and the chief photographer Ifadh, have been super-efficient and have devoted their undivided effort in organizing GlamAlert within 40 days. Models were selected, advertising was arranged, programmes were printed, and only few more days remain until the show; you might need to hurry up before tickets are sold out.

Fashion is most enchanting when its energy, power, and supremacy is expressed by the means of raw talent. GlamAlert hits the runway to portray the beauty of fashion through fluid strokes of new and upcoming designers and will showcase uncharted talent of amateur models. It will bring delight to your eyes and nourishment to a social cause. Designers are enjoying more freedom and they are thankful to GlamAlert for paving a platform. Hence what we are about to witness is a detonation of unrestricted young talent. The show will unveil collections that are Military-inspired, and contemporary versions of the Far East, and will artistically depict social concerns such as hunger, poverty, and violence against women. It will take charge by means of vivid colours of nature, and historical resemblance.

While Sri Lankan designers lament that there is still a long way to go before their names are recognised on global fashion racks, GlamAlert may surprise you with how the Sri Lankan youth enjoys the freedom that the world of glamour has given them. At GlamAlert, some of these young

designers will challenge Jason Wu’s Fall/Winter 2012 sharp-shouldered and brocade designs, while some others will bring back the memories of Alexander McQueen.

It will be a night to remember, and a cause one can’t afford to forget. Tickets are priced at Rs 1000 and Rs 500 and can be purchased from ticketlk.com or at the entrance. For further information call Ama, the project chairperson on 0771083411.

Event sponsors include Abstract (main sponsor), Titan (co sponsor), Redbull, Esteem Magazine, Max Television, Maxa.lk, Extreme Youth, Malshan Flora, Mariyan Beauty Spa, and Ridgecrest Asia PVT LTD. The production is carried out by Imagine Works.

Since it was chartered in 2009, the RCCU magic Hub, one of the vibrant clubs of the Rotaract family, has won many awards including ‘The Most Outstanding Newly Established Rotaract Club for 2009-2010’, ‘The Most Outstanding Community Based Rotaract Club for 2010-2011’, ‘The Most Outstanding Public Relations Project for 2009-2010’ and ‘The Most Outstanding Professional Development Project for 2010-2011’.
