Young designers show off strong, smart sensuality at the Park Street Mews
By Prashanthi Jayasekara
Harking back to a bygone era, two upcoming designers Nilakshi and Tharundu unveiled medieval-inspired collections at the Glamlert catwalk show last Saturday. Tharindu brought the legend of Robin Hood back to life, and Nilakshi’s rich and regal crusader inspired collection had a touch of brocade patterns. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the far-eastern designs, Manil’s neatly perched brocade sheath attire transmitted a sense of richness and opulence to the atmosphere. Ranga’s collection had a buttoned-up feel. The military inspired collection with a touch of youthful vigour was showcased in an array of army green, black, and brown colours. A military inspired theme was also observed in the collection “Hidden Beauty” by Suneth.
Mihiri emphasized the ferocious strength and sensuality of women with a collection that was dark, thought-provoking, and coolly feminine. She used a vermillion look to convey the message – stop violence against women. Black and white monochrome designs were reminiscent of Chevon’s collection at Glamalert – and that certainly was popular. She showcased a gorgeous array of high slit gowns, and subtlety flared trousers reaching slightly above the ankle. Uwani, Waruni, and Anna delivered collections in vibrant spring colours. Uwani’s collection had a feel of monochrome style in varied hues. Anna introduced a new trend of romantic wrap-around skirts. Waruni’s collection revolved around the theme nature, and showcased some distinctively adoring styles. Along with spring colours, Chamira fused performance fabrics with feminine lines to bring track and field to the runway.
Glamalert from High Street is a charity fashion show, which was organized by the Rotaract Club of Centenial United. Glamalert showcased some alluring designs by young designers and the talent of amateur models. The main purpose of the event was to bring the aspiring talent into the realm of charity; all proceeds from the evening will be contributed to help provide books to underprivileged schools in the outskirts of Colombo.
Project chairperson Ama, president Himesh, project advisor Bhagya and the team including the choreographer Umanga, did a remarkable job organizing this event within 40 days. The event was just sumptuous and spectacular. The event sponsors were Abstract (main sponsor), Titan (co sponsor), Redbull, Esteem Magazine, Max Television, Maxa.lk, Extreme Youth, Malshan Flora, Mariyan Beauty Spa, and Ridgecrest Asia PVT LTD.
