'Can Fi' is the CSR project conducted by the Wisdom Business Star Community (which is a
body formed by students who are past and present participants in an annual business skills
and leadership development programme at Wisdom Business Academy) with the objective
of fighting against cancer, to be the strength and raise funds to help those who are in need
of it.
“Can Fi was a dream, for students to not only learn CSR but to actually put it into practice. Can Fi was founded in the year 2010, when the support given for those who were fighting cancer was largely dominated by the government sector. There was a lack of support and a minimal amount of effort by the youth in this country, restricted to small projects that did not provide sustainable backing. More than this, Can Fi is a result of great motivation and leadership skills demonstrated by the students involved to create something greater than themselves, to contribute to society in their own way,” said Tharindu Ameresekere, Founder (Can Fi) and Senior Lecturer for the Enterprise Pillar (CIMA) at Wisdom Business Academy.
“With abundant energy, dedication and skill displayed by the students at Wisdom Business Academy, there was potential for a sustainable CSR project that would continue year on year. Can Fi identifies a key need every year and dedicates its energy to fulfilling this need to help those fighting cancer,” Ameresekere commented.
The very first project conducted was in 2010 when Can Fi started its operations in a simple and small manner. Although the project was small in capacity, those who contributed were wholeheartedly focused on achieving greater good. The Can Fi student body organized a walk that raised funds which were utilized to buy certain medication required by the National Cancer Institute, Maharagama. In 2011 Can Fi stepped up to a whole new level and undertook the responsibility of putting up signposts at the National Cancer Institute which was a dire need according to the officials at the hospital. The sign post system now helps direct people to their required destination through the hospital without any complications. This project was funded through a walk organized by a more fortified student body that lead to the success of the project. “Can Fi - Walk against cancer” was the second project undertaken by Can Fi. Setting higher targets and achieving even higher results amidst many challenges, Canfi 2012 was another triumph.
“Nothing can compare to the satisfaction achieved through knowing that you have contributed towards helping for a greater cause” is a feeling that everybody experiences through Can Fi. Strong and dynamic as we are now, Can Fi is once again aiming at fulfilling its target of aiding cancer patients at the National Cancer Institute. Specific needs of ‘Ward 15’, ‘PCTU’ and ‘Operation Theatre C' at the hospital will be met through the proceeds of “Can Fi 2012”.
